At November 22, 2005 - Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected president of Liberia, becoming the first woman to lead an African country. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (born October 29, 1938) is 24th and current president of Liberia. She served as finance minister under President William Tolbert 1979-1980-coup, after which she left Liberia and held senior positions in various financial institutions.

She placed a distant second in 1997 presidential election. Later she was elected president in 2005 presidential election and took over 16 January 2006. Sirleaf is the first modern, and currently the only elected female head of state in Africa.
